Stirling blinder helps Ireland edge West Indies in high-scoring thriller

After a 0-3 drubbing in the preceding ODI series, Ireland came back strongly against the West Indies, edging the hosts by four runs in the first of three T20Is, at St. George's Park, Grenada.

Ireland, who opted to bat first, blazed away in the powerplay and hammered the highest score in a T20I powerplay - an unprecedented 93 for no loss, courtesy a brutal exhibition of ball-striking from Kevin O'Brien and Paul Stirling. The latter outscored his partner by a huge margin and the hosts looked in utter disarray before the returning Dwayne Bravo came to their rescue and knocked over O'Brien. Stirling followed soon after, dismissed by Hayden Walsh Junior, and missed out on a well-deserved hundred.

The damage done, however, was already quite significant, as Kesrick Williams and Khary Pierre received a hiding of a lifetime before the experience of Bravo brought about some damage control. In fact, Pierre and Cottrell, who had had poor opening spells, went on to pick up a couple of wickets each and potentially truncated the target by about thirty runs. Still, Ireland's 208 was bound to be competitive.

The sixathon continued during the West Indian chase, as the batsmen played supporting cameos around a ravaging Evin Lewis (53 off 29). However, a steady rate of fall of wickets ensured that Ireland were always in the game, as the bowlers shared the top-order spoils. The Irish exhibited a certain hunger to win, with some excellent catching and ground fielding to build sustained pressure on the West Indies.

It was all going according to the plan until the 18th over, with the equation reading "43 to win off 18". A struggling Pooran and Sherfane Rutherford manifested the full extent of their wrath on Andrew McCarthy in a violent over that read - 6.6.1.4.6.4 - creaming 27 runs off the over and turning the match around for the West Indies. The equation now read: 16 to win off 12.

It was then, however, that Craig Young turned up with a penultimate over for the ages, conceding just three runs and picking up the wicket of the dangerous Pooran, leaving Joshua Little to defend 13 off the last over.

Little picked up Rutherford off the first ball, but was brought right back down to earth, courtesy a first-ball six by Bravo. However, he held his nerve to snaffle Bravo's wicket and bowl a dot ball to Walsh with four to win off the final ball, to hand Ireland a nail-biting four-run win.

Pant to miss Rajkot ODI due to concussion

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the second ODI of the ongoing series against Australia due to concussion, the BCCI confirmed on Wednesday (January 15).

Pant, who got hit on the helmet while batting in the three-match series opener in Mumbai on Tuesday evening, took no further part in the game and was taken to the hospital for "overnight monitoring". However, the scans reported nothing major and the wicketkeeper-bat was subsequently discharged.

Keeping in line with the concussion protocols, Pant has now been ruled out from the second game of the series, to be played in Rajkot on Friday (January 17). The left-hander will instead check-in at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for his rehabilitation as per ICC's concussion rules.

KL Rahul, who kept the wickets during India's 10-wicket loss to Australia, will likely don the gloves in Pant's absence. The Delhi batsman's availability for the third and final ODI, in Bengaluru on Sunday (January 19), will be assessed in due course.

Du Plessis "very keen" on having De Villiers back for T20 World Cup

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Faf du Plessis has joined the chorus calling for AB de Villiers' mooted return to the international arena at the T20 World Cup. In fact, South Africa's captain said on Wednesday, he had long been a supporter of the resumption of one of the most storied careers in cricket history - which was abruptly ended when de Villiers quit in May 2018.

Now, with de Villiers saying this week he would "love" to play for South Africa again and that he had been in discussions with senior figures in and around the team to facilitate that happening, his shock retirement seems set to become merely an interruption.

Du Plessis added to that narrative when he said, "We spoke about it, and I was very keen to have him back. That was even before the new coaching staff was on board."

The conversation had progressed as far as the details of "what does the next year look like in terms of T20 cricket - how many games; where, when, what? And then trying to unfold that in a way that we can get him back. He's keen to come do that."

When de Villiers might return had yet to be decided, but he would have to appear in at least some of the 11 T20s South Africa will play against England and Australia in February and against West Indies in August before the World Cup in Australia in October and November. But he might miss the England series, which starts four days after the Big Bash League, where he is playing for the Brisbane Heat.

"In an ideal world we would like to try and make sure that we can play our best 11, 12, 13 players for a few games or series together leading up to the T20 World Cup," Du Plessis said, and explained his thinking. "A learning curve for me with the 50-over World Cup last year was that we never had the combinations we were looking for. As a new coach Ottis Gibson didn't know a lot of the players. There was a search for a lot of players and finding combinations. If I could do that over again, I would try and settle into the combinations a little earlier so the guys can play as many games as possible together."

Gibson was out of a job in the wake of South Africa losing five of their eight completed matches at the one-day World Cup, where reports surfaced of de Villiers' rebuffed offer to come back for that tournament. Then Enoch Nkwe presided over a 3-0 Test series defeat in India in an interim capacity. That prompted the appointment of Mark Boucher as coach, and Jacques Kallis and Charl Langeveldt as his batting and bowling consultants.

MS Dhoni not awarded BCCI central contract for 2019-20

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
MS Dhoni has been omitted by the BCCI from a 27-member list of central contract awardees for the 2019-20 season. The 38-year-old former India captain, who hasn't played competitively since India's World Cup semifinal exit to New Zealand at Old Trafford, had held an 'A' category contract in the previous cycle viz. 2018-19.

Dhoni's omission is a possible indicator that the legendary World Cup-winning captain's days as India cricketer are numbered. The keeper-batsman took a sabbatical in the immediate aftermath of India's World Cup exit but hasn't been considered for selection thereafter with Chief Selector MSK Prasad stating that the team was "moving on" from Dhoni.

While Dhoni has remained tight-lipped over his future, hinting suggestively at possible clarity in January 2020, head coach Ravi Shastri, in an interview with IANS,left open a small chance of participation in this year's T20 World Cup, but subject to his performance in the IPL and other selection dynamics.

Rahul, Shami elevated to Grade A; Mayank Agarwal handed Grade B retainer

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah continue to hold on to the A+ grade of contract which will see them pocket a whopping INR 7 crore over the period of September 2019 - October 2020.

KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami, who held the Grade B contract in the previous cycle, have been elevated to the INR 5 crore a year Grade A. Test match 'keeper Wriddhiman Saha moves up the pay grade from C to B and will pocket INR 3 crore. Rishabh Pant retains his Category A contract despite losing his spot as first-choice Test 'keeper to Saha while Mayank Agarwal, who enjoyed a breakthrough start to his Test career, is named in Grade B after being handed his first central contract.

Those that broke into India's limited-overs squads over the last year - Shreyas Iyer, Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar - have been handed Category C retainers and will take home INR 1 crore retainers.

Dinesh Karthik, Khaleel Ahmed and Ambati Rayudu are the three other contracted players from the previous season to lose out on their central contracts.

Sophie Devine replaces Amy Satterthwaite as New Zealand Women captain

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
All-rounder Sophie Devine has been appointed captain of the New Zealand Women, taking over from Amy Satterthwaite ahead of the fortcoming South Africa series which serves as a build-up to the T20 World Cup. Devine, 30, will be third player to skipper the White Ferns in the last 18 months, after Suzie Bates and Satterthwaite. While Bates resigned in September 2018, Satterthwaite is on a break after giving birth to her first child.

"It's something that you sort of dream of, isn't it?" Devine said on Thursday (January 16) after she was unveiled as skipper by New Zealand Cricket. "I didn't think it would happen during my cricket career. I just want to continue to build on the fantastic work that both Suzie Bates and Amy Satterthwaite have have bought into the side and really driving the culture behind the team.

"It's an exciting time for women's cricket in this country with the recently signed MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with NZC, a fresh direction with our new coach Bob Carter, and two ICC World Cups on the horizon. We've got a good mix of talent and experience in the group, and I'm looking forward to leaning on my fellow senior players to try and build on the good work done by Amy and Suzie Bates."

"We've been really disappointed with the last couple of World Cup performances," she said. "We've certainly got a lot of work to do; to win the World Cup and bring it home."

Devine enjoyed a landmark season of the WBBL with the Adelaide Strikers late last year, finishing as the player of the tournament after scoring a total of 769 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 130.33. She also took 19 wickets through the season and became the first woman to hit a half-century and take a fifer in a game. She has followed that up with an equally impressive run in the Super Smash for Wellington Blaze, smashing 315 runs at an average of 52.50 and strike rate of 177.96, including a highest of 112.

A veteran of 102 ODIs and 83 T20Is, Devine had been tipped for a role as New Zealand Captain since her college days and despite that premonition taking time to manifest, New Zealand's head coach Bob Carter is confident the team is in very capable hands heading into the T20 and 50-over World Cups of 2020 and 2021 respectively.

"I'm very confident that Sophie is going to do a great job," Carter said. "Look at how great a player she is. Sophie's been an outstanding performer for the White Ferns for more than a decade now, and we feel she's ready to step up and lead this team. She has a sound understanding of the game and, most importantly, holds the respect of her fellow players. We believe the leadership can take her game to an even higher level."

Rachel Priest returns; Jess Kerr gets maiden call-up

New Zealand also welcomed veteran keeper-bat Rachel Priest into their squad for the series against South Africa. Priest, who was dropped after a poor World Cup in 2017, recently earned her central contract with consistent performances in T20 leagues and has enjoyed a great Super Smash tournament so far, hammering 305 runs at a strike-rate of 133.18.

Also returning to the squad is batter Lauren Down while 21-year-old all-rounder Jess Kerr, older sister to Amelia, has received her maiden call-up after an impressive domestic season with the ball.

"To be selected in my first White Ferns squad is a huge honour and it's something I've been working towards for a while," Jess Kerr said. "To be picked in a squad alongside 'Melie' (Amelia) is pretty special. She's inspired me a lot to get back into playing cricket competitively and push for higher honours. I've loved playing alongside her in the Blaze, but to be representing our country together is even more special."

New Zealand will play three ODIs and five T20Is against South Africa beginning on January 25 at Eden Park in Auckland.

Archer set to be elbowed out by Wood as England swear by injury management

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
When it comes to international cricket, Jofra Archer has been a young man in a hurry. Since he made his England debut at the start of last summer, he has won a World Cup and made an immediate impression on Test cricket during the Ashes series. Thanks to his pace and his skill, almost overnight he has become one of England's most important players in all formats. But with that rise has come greater expectation. And when those expectations have not been met, criticism has followed.

Archer's difficult tour to New Zealand, when he took just two wickets for the cost of 209 runs across two Tests, was the first real time that things had not gone all his own way in an England shirt. There was particular criticism of his pace, which was down at times on the 90mph thunderbolts he had consistently served up against Australia, but little recognition that both Test matches in New Zealand were played on pitches as flat as pancakes. This was also Archer's first experience with the red Kookaburra ball and his first Tests away from home.

Nevertheless, for a bowler who was supposed to provide England with a cutting edge on flat pitches, it wasn't quite the start to life as an overseas Test bowler either Joe Root or Archer had in mind. Things started better on this tour of South Africa, however, with a five-wicket haul in South Africa's second innings at Centurion and a return to somewhere near his menacing best. But then a longstanding elbow injury struck, ruling Archer out of England's victory at Newlands.

It remains unclear whether Archer has fully recovered from the injury ahead of the third Test in Port Elizabeth which begins on Thursday (January 16). There were reports from training on Wednesday that he didn't look all that comfortable when bowling in the nets and Root suggested that Archer would not be risked if not fully fit.

But there are also indications that England may be considering selecting Mark Wood to replace the injured James Anderson in the final eleven even if Archer is deemed available for selection. If so, it would be the first time he has been dropped by England.

"He's 24 years old. He's right at the start of his career," Root said. "He's got a huge amount of ability and in seven Test matches got three five-wicket hauls. It's clear to see what he's capable of doing and he's very much at the start. Managing workloads is a very important part of it as well. He's played a huge amount of cricket since he's come into the international arena and we've seen a little bit of pushback from his body, with the elbow injury.

"Of course if he's fit and raring to go you want him in your side, but you've also got to make sure that he's 100% ready and he can deliver all of his skills, not just being able to seam it around and swing it, but bowl at 90mph too. We've got to look after him as a player and his career as well as just trying to obviously win this series."

While Archer's selection or otherwise for the third Test will depend on whether he is fully fit, Root also acknowledged that England need to manage the expectation around him, particularly given the limited Test, and indeed red-ball, experience he has.

"He's come into international cricket off the back of some brilliant domestic T20 cricket in particular," Root said. "I know he's performed well in county cricket but his reputation has been from IPL cricket, from Big Bash cricket, performing and excelling in that.

"He came into Test cricket already with a reputation the standard of Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad, people were matching him with Pat Cummings, [Josh] Hazelwood, [Mitchell] Starc. But these players have played a lot of Test cricket. For him it's about managing where he's at in his career and for us as a management group, understanding that he's very young as well and that every game he will learn, every game he picks things up. He's a very fast learner, we've seen that in white ball cricket, and we have to give him that opportunity in Test cricket as well."

Should Wood be selected, it would be his first game since the third Test in Saint Lucia on the tour of the Caribbean last winter. Then, he blitzed West Indies during their first innings, picking up five-wickets in one of the quickest spells an England bowler has ever produced. It proved the catalyst for a comprehensive victory and hinted at the destruction Wood can wreak when fully fit. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to back that performance up in Test cricket since. An injury sustained during the World Cup final has ruled him out of the game until now.

He could well be rusty. He has not played a competitive match since the World Cup final and although he has been bowling quickly in the nets, it would be a risk to throw him into a Test with such limited matchplay behind him. Root confirmed, however, that it might be a risk England are willing to take. "Every now and again you can't worry too often about is he going to get through a five-day game," Root said. "If they've proven themselves to be fit and they've jumped through every hoop and worked very hard to get back there, you've got to give them that opportunity."

Whoever England select, they will go into the third Test with plenty of confidence following an excellent display at Newlands. That it was achieved with five players under the age of 24 pleased Root even more.

"It's very exciting especially with a young group of players," Root said. "For those guys who experienced the last game and for us to get across the line in that fashion is a really big move forward for us as a team and should give them a huge amount of confidence.

"We speak a lot about attitude and effort and the environment we're trying to create and the culture of our three teams. I thought we lived that brilliantly across the five days down in Cape Town so it's backing that up [in Port Elizabeth]. With a young group of players the challenge is always, once you've performed very well and you've won a game, it's then can you then back that up? I'm very confident that we can but it's a good challenge for us."
