Match Preview
Perhaps such kind of thoroughbred fast bowling would be witnessed in only one game of the ongoing ODI series between India and Australia. Perhaps the Indian batsmen would be back to their dominating best in the next two ODIs. Just that in the cricketing landscape, when a batsman pits his skills and temperament against a genuine fast bowler, it tends to bring out the most dramatic chapter of the sport.

In the Wankhede ODI, with a lethal cocktail of pace and variations, the duo of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins laid down the marker for the rest of the series. When Starc burst open Shardul Thakur with a pacy reverse swinging delivery, it certainly made for great viewing. The slow-motion replays and the dismissal viewed from various angles just added to the hype. Starc was ably supported by Cummins, Kane Richardson and the spinners, as the Australian bowlers put the stopper on India's scoring rate by taking wickets and bowled them out for 255.

David Warner and Aaron Finch then ruthlessly dismantled the Indian attack to condemn the hosts to a 10-wicket defeat. It was a thoroughly professional show put up by the Australian side with both the bat and ball. The pacers employed cross-seam, scrambled seam and the cutters to peg India back. Finch and Warner took advantage of almost every over-pitched delivery, or for the matter when the duo was offered width.

Can the visitors build on the clinical show at the Wankhede with another efficient performance in the second ODI in Rajkot? The Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium is generally known as a high-scoring ground. So, it would be interesting to see whether the Australian pacers would again look to vary their pace or tweak their tactics slightly. The Australian middle order also would be looking to make their presence felt in the second game.

What about the home side? Virat Kohli and his men would hope to completely banish the Wankhede ODI from their minds. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul couldn't kick-on and convert starts into sizeable scores. Kohli's experiment of pushing himself down the order to number 4 also didn't work. Meanwhile, the middle and lower-order batsmen made decent contributions, but they had too much to do.

The hosts also might have to relook at their gameplan. The Indian pacers largely bowled very full with the new ball and were duly punished by the Australian batsmen. Warner in the press conference had also noted: "Fortunately tonight, I think they over-pitched a little bit to Finchy."

When: Friday, 08:00 AM GMT / 01:30 PM LOCAL

Where: Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot
What to expect
It was interesting to see a few of the Indian batsmen trying to replicate Starc's pace and angles with throw-downs. The left-arm pacer seems to have done some work with how he loads up just before he releases the ball. Even though the track in Rajkot is expected to favour the batsmen, spinners have found a bit of success in the longest format at the stadium. However, only two ODIs have been played at the stadium, with South Africa's Morne Morkel reaping rewards by employing sharp bumpers as well as the slower short ball in 2015. As far as the weather is concerned, it should turn out to be a sunny day.
Team News
India: With Pant being ruled out of the second ODI due to concussion, Rahul looks set to take over the wicketkeeping duties. India may opt for the extra batsman in Manish Pandey or Kedar Jadhav, who can also bowl part-time spin. Jadeja's experience of bowling at his home ground may just ensure he would keep his place in the side. Meanwhile, Kohli could move back to his customary number three position.

Probable XI: Rohit, Dhawan, Kohli, Rahul, Iyer, Pandey/Jadhav, Jadeja, Shardul Thakur/Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

Australia: On the other hand, the visitors would be expected to play the same playing XI that romped to a resounding win at the Wankhede.

Probable XI: Finch, Warner, Labuschagne, Smith, Turner, Carey, Agar, Cummins, Starc, Richardson, Zampa
What they said
"It's got to be an attacking approach. I think if you're on the back foot and have a defensive mindset then that's when he can get on top of you. The most important thing playing in places like India, against these guys, is to have a little bit of character. You probably know you're going to get hit for boundaries but it can really get worse if you make that affect you. Virat, I have got him a few times now but I don't think there is anything in it. He still scores at over 100 (strike rate) against me. He is a very hard guy to bowl to." - Adam Zampa on getting Kohli's' wicket six times in ODIs.

"Experimentation is something we are looking forward to. Hopefully, we will get a good number for each batsman. This is the time we should try and experiment things and hopefully it will work-out in the future." - Shreyas Iyer on what's ahead for India

Stirling blinder helps Ireland edge West Indies in high-scoring thriller

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
After a 0-3 drubbing in the preceding ODI series, Ireland came back strongly against the West Indies, edging the hosts by four runs in the first of three T20Is, at St. George's Park, Grenada.

Ireland, who opted to bat first, blazed away in the powerplay and hammered the highest score in a T20I powerplay - an unprecedented 93 for no loss, courtesy a brutal exhibition of ball-striking from Kevin O'Brien and Paul Stirling. The latter outscored his partner by a huge margin and the hosts looked in utter disarray before the returning Dwayne Bravo came to their rescue and knocked over O'Brien. Stirling followed soon after, dismissed by Hayden Walsh Junior, and missed out on a well-deserved hundred.

The damage done, however, was already quite significant, as Kesrick Williams and Khary Pierre received a hiding of a lifetime before the experience of Bravo brought about some damage control. In fact, Pierre and Cottrell, who had had poor opening spells, went on to pick up a couple of wickets each and potentially truncated the target by about thirty runs. Still, Ireland's 208 was bound to be competitive.

The sixathon continued during the West Indian chase, as the batsmen played supporting cameos around a ravaging Evin Lewis (53 off 29). However, a steady rate of fall of wickets ensured that Ireland were always in the game, as the bowlers shared the top-order spoils. The Irish exhibited a certain hunger to win, with some excellent catching and ground fielding to build sustained pressure on the West Indies.

It was all going according to the plan until the 18th over, with the equation reading "43 to win off 18". A struggling Pooran and Sherfane Rutherford manifested the full extent of their wrath on Andrew McCarthy in a violent over that read - 6.6.1.4.6.4 - creaming 27 runs off the over and turning the match around for the West Indies. The equation now read: 16 to win off 12.

It was then, however, that Craig Young turned up with a penultimate over for the ages, conceding just three runs and picking up the wicket of the dangerous Pooran, leaving Joshua Little to defend 13 off the last over.

Little picked up Rutherford off the first ball, but was brought right back down to earth, courtesy a first-ball six by Bravo. However, he held his nerve to snaffle Bravo's wicket and bowl a dot ball to Walsh with four to win off the final ball, to hand Ireland a nail-biting four-run win.

Pant to miss Rajkot ODI due to concussion

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the second ODI of the ongoing series against Australia due to concussion, the BCCI confirmed on Wednesday (January 15).

Pant, who got hit on the helmet while batting in the three-match series opener in Mumbai on Tuesday evening, took no further part in the game and was taken to the hospital for "overnight monitoring". However, the scans reported nothing major and the wicketkeeper-bat was subsequently discharged.

Keeping in line with the concussion protocols, Pant has now been ruled out from the second game of the series, to be played in Rajkot on Friday (January 17). The left-hander will instead check-in at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for his rehabilitation as per ICC's concussion rules.

KL Rahul, who kept the wickets during India's 10-wicket loss to Australia, will likely don the gloves in Pant's absence. The Delhi batsman's availability for the third and final ODI, in Bengaluru on Sunday (January 19), will be assessed in due course.

Du Plessis "very keen" on having De Villiers back for T20 World Cup

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Faf du Plessis has joined the chorus calling for AB de Villiers' mooted return to the international arena at the T20 World Cup. In fact, South Africa's captain said on Wednesday, he had long been a supporter of the resumption of one of the most storied careers in cricket history - which was abruptly ended when de Villiers quit in May 2018.

Now, with de Villiers saying this week he would "love" to play for South Africa again and that he had been in discussions with senior figures in and around the team to facilitate that happening, his shock retirement seems set to become merely an interruption.

Du Plessis added to that narrative when he said, "We spoke about it, and I was very keen to have him back. That was even before the new coaching staff was on board."

The conversation had progressed as far as the details of "what does the next year look like in terms of T20 cricket - how many games; where, when, what? And then trying to unfold that in a way that we can get him back. He's keen to come do that."

When de Villiers might return had yet to be decided, but he would have to appear in at least some of the 11 T20s South Africa will play against England and Australia in February and against West Indies in August before the World Cup in Australia in October and November. But he might miss the England series, which starts four days after the Big Bash League, where he is playing for the Brisbane Heat.

"In an ideal world we would like to try and make sure that we can play our best 11, 12, 13 players for a few games or series together leading up to the T20 World Cup," Du Plessis said, and explained his thinking. "A learning curve for me with the 50-over World Cup last year was that we never had the combinations we were looking for. As a new coach Ottis Gibson didn't know a lot of the players. There was a search for a lot of players and finding combinations. If I could do that over again, I would try and settle into the combinations a little earlier so the guys can play as many games as possible together."

Gibson was out of a job in the wake of South Africa losing five of their eight completed matches at the one-day World Cup, where reports surfaced of de Villiers' rebuffed offer to come back for that tournament. Then Enoch Nkwe presided over a 3-0 Test series defeat in India in an interim capacity. That prompted the appointment of Mark Boucher as coach, and Jacques Kallis and Charl Langeveldt as his batting and bowling consultants.
